VIAGRA is a prescription drug used to treat erection difficulties, such as erectile dysfunction (ED).

Does Viagra cause Blindness?

As any medication, Viagra can cause several side effects. Some of these side effects can affect vision. For example, Viagra can cause the following vision problems:

  • Blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light and
  • Problems with recognizing the difference between colors (green and blue)

Temporary and permanent blindness has been reported by some patients taking Viagra. However, it is rather difficult to determine if blindness developing is directly related to Viagra use.

In people taking PDE5 inhibitors including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra there have been reported cases of a condition called onarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition is characterized by sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. NAION is more likely to appear in men with risk factors. These risk factors include:

  • Being over 50 years of age
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases
  • Diabetes

If you develop any vision changes while taking Viagra, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
