Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate)

VIAGRA is a prescription drug used to treat erection difficulties, such as erectile dysfunction (ED).

When Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are contraindicated?

In spite of its high effectiveness and safety profile, ED drugs are contraindicated for use in certain conditions. These conditions include:

  • Cardiovascular diseases including history of heart attacks in the past 6 months, stroke, coronary heart disease, angina, high blood pressure, low blood pressure.
  • Liver disease including liver failure, cirrhosis
  • Kidney diseases including renal failure
  • Vision disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Leukemia
  • Blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia, multiple myeloma
  • Conditions that causes penis deformation: cavernosal fibrosis, angulation and Peyronie's disease
  • Allergic reactions to Sildenafil citrate and other components of the medication
  • Women
  • Men under 18 years of age
  • Concomitant application with nitrogen oxide donors

Make sure to let your doctor know if you take any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, antacids and herbal supplements.

In men taking PDE5 inhibitors, there have been reported cases of a condition known as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION may lead to sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. If you develop any changes in vision while taking any ED drug, contact your doctor immediately.

ED drugs like Cialis, Viagra and Levitra belong to pregnancy category B. That means that safety of the medications during pregnancy was not studied. However, all PDE5 inhibitors are not approved for use in women.

In rare cases patients taking PDE5 inhibitors can experience a prolonged erection that may last more than 3 hours and can be painful. If you experience painful and prolonged erection, make sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible.

ED medications do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
